How To Witness To Someone About Jesus Christ

Every born again believer is called by God to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with lost souls. This is not optional — it is a direct command from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself:

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." ~ Mark 16:15 KJV

Many Christians want to witness but don't know how to start. This guide will give you practical, Biblical steps to share the Gospel clearly and effectively.

Step 1 — Pray Before You Go

Before you witness to anyone, pray and ask God to open doors and prepare the hearts of the people you will speak with. The Holy Spirit must do the work of conviction — your job is simply to be faithful to share the message.

"The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise." ~ Proverbs 11:30 KJV

"How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" ~ Romans 10:14 KJV

Step 2 — Build A Relationship First

The best witnessing opportunities come through genuine relationships. When people know you care about them, they are far more open to hearing what you have to say. Look for natural opportunities in everyday conversations — at work, with family, with neighbors, and with strangers.

Step 3 — Ask The Right Questions

A great way to open a Gospel conversation is to ask simple questions like:

"Do you believe in God?"
"Have you ever thought about what happens when you die?"
"Do you know for certain that you are going to heaven?"
"If you died tonight, do you know where you would spend eternity?"

These questions get people thinking about eternity and naturally open the door to sharing the Gospel.

Step 4 — Share The Gospel Clearly

The Gospel has four key components. Make sure you cover all four:

1. Everyone is a sinner.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" ~ Romans 3:23 KJV

2. The penalty for sin is death and Hell.
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." ~ Romans 6:23 KJV

3. Jesus Christ paid the penalty for sin.
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." ~ Romans 5:8 KJV
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" ~ 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 KJV

4. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." ~ Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV

Step 5 — Give Them The Opportunity To Get Saved

After sharing the Gospel, ask them directly: "Would you like to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour right now?" Don't be afraid to ask. The worst they can say is no — and you have still planted a seed that God can water.

If they say yes, explain that no special prayer is required — salvation comes by simply believing the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the heart. That Jesus died for their sins, was buried, and rose again. The moment they place their complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone, they are saved. If they have questions, point them to our FAQ page or our Gospel page.

Step 6 — Use A Tract

A Gospel tract is a small printed piece that explains the Gospel. It is one of the most powerful soul winning tools available because it gives the person something to read and think about after you leave. Download our Soul Winning Tracts — Side 1 and Side 2 — to print and use when witnessing.

Step 7 — Don't Give Up

Not everyone will get saved when you witness to them. Some people will reject the message. That is okay — your responsibility is to be faithful to share, not to force a decision. God does the saving. Plant the seed and trust Him with the results.

"So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." ~ 1 Corinthians 3:7 KJV

Common Objections And How To Answer Them

"I'm a good person — I don't need to be saved."
Response: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." ~ Romans 3:23 KJV. God's standard is perfection, not goodness compared to other people. Even one sin makes us guilty before God.

"I believe in God — that's enough."
Response: "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." ~ James 2:19 KJV. Even the devil believes God exists. Salvation requires placing personal faith in Jesus Christ specifically.

"There are many ways to heaven."
Response: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." ~ John 14:6 KJV. Jesus Himself said He is the only way. This is not our opinion — it is God's Word.

"I'll get saved later."
Response: "Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth." ~ Proverbs 27:1 KJV. No person is guaranteed tomorrow. The time to get saved is today.
